Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is currently a Curriculum Council subject which involves students spending a minimum amount of time in a workplace (110 -120 hours) to achieve credit towards their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

In 2008, this will fully transition into Workplace Learning (WPL) as a Council-Endorsed Program, which will involve two different categories (Modes).

Mode 1 WPL will be taken by students completing one or more Units of Competence as part of a National Qualification, signed off in the workplace. This Mode is suitable for students completing meaningful and substantial VET Programs.

Mode 2 – Employability Skills, involves students completing a set of employability skills and is similar in format to the current SWL subjects.

Workplace Learning is an integral component of a student’s Vocational Education & Training (VET) Program

VET Programs that can be undertaken by students in Public Schools include:

  • School Based Traineeship SBT
  • Aboriginal School Based Traineeship ASBT
  • School Apprenticeship Link Program SAL
  • Nationally Accredited Training Courses - VET Qualifications and associated Units of Competence

Students can undertake a Work Experience placement as part of a pre-Vocational course. This is usually offered in Years 9 and 10 and provides a taster for students to introduce them to the work environment.

For all forms of workplace learning the local secondary school should be contacted in the first instance. For District information, please contact the Enterprise and Vocational Education (EVE) Coordinator in the local Education District Office.

All schools in Western Australia are required to follow the Workplace Learning Procedures and Guidelines Policy for students in the workplace.
