Back to top Step 2 - Planning

Step One was probably a little challenging. Frequently, the benefits of knowing yourself well are not always immediately obvious until you have recognised and understood its value in the broader context of your own career development!  Remember to refer to the work experience flowchart attached below to guide you through the process.

Your planning activities will help you to focus on where and how you collect information.  It will also reflect your growing awareness and understanding of yourself and you interpret the opportunities within the labour market.

Planning needs to foster SMARTER activities, so develop an action plan to keep you on track:

  • S be specific to your needs and career goals
  • M be measurable to reflect your behaviours and actions you need to complete
  • A be realistically attainable by you
  • R be relevant and acceptable by you
  • T be time-framed with clear milestones to work toward
  • E extend your capabilities
  • R reward your efforts at each stage!

Action Planner

An action planner will be your base document to plan your activities, record the activities you undertake and note the progress of your efforts!  As a minimum, your action planner needs to include columns that will record:

  • your preferred industry type
  • details of targeted organisations or employers
  • type(s) of work experience available
  • contact details (including web and email details)
  • names of personal contacts – those you know and want to know
  • contact dates and follow up activities; and
  • outcomes of any previous contacts you may have made

An example action planner has been attached below as a starting point.  This document will also become a key networking document for you – so consider this an investment of your time and effort!

Identifying organisations and agencies

Before you can start to identify places that are of interest to you, you first need to decide your preferred working environment.  If you are unsure of your industry sector preferences, review the 19 industry groups on the myfuture web pages @ www.myfuture.edu.au and narrow down your working environments to just one or two preferences.

ACTIVITY

Develop a personal action planner.

Note:
When writing your action planner use the SMARTER principles.  This means that your action planner requires you to undertake activities before the investment of your planning can reap rewards.
